Talk about it in the
Message Boards
When he stepped on the floor
for the first time this summer at the Great American
Shootout in Denton, it became clear - Houston Elite
Dale Vanwright was going to be a recruitable athlete
once again. The plan for the all-around 6-foot-6, 200-pound
wing from Bellaire High School in Houston was to go to prep
school and become a member of the Class of 2007. But things
changed for Vanwright. After getting his release from
Colorado a couple of weeks later, UTEP stepped up to the
plate with an offer for this fall, and that's where
Vanwright will be heading having verbally committed to the
Miners.

"I thought it would be a good
fit for me," Vanwright said. "It's a good program - a young
program - and I like the coaches there. It was a tough
decision (not to go to prep school) but me and my dad talked
about it and decided it would be the best fit for me."
Vanwright actually made his commitment to UTEP prior to
visiting the campus - which he'll do this weekend. But with
the relationship he built with the coaching staff during the
summer months, both he and his father felt comfortable with
going ahead with the commitment. The plan is for him to fit
in at the small forward spot, and Vanwright plans on
utilizing what he learned on the AAU circuit this summer in
the fall.
"My understanding of the game got better this summer,"
Vanwright said. "I'm going to keep working on all parts of
my game."
Texas Hoops Analysis: Dale is a smooth athlete who
can score from the perimeter or take his man off the dribble
and finish in the paint. He has a strong and athletic body,
can take contact on the dribble and still finish, has a
smooth jumper out to the 3 point line and a nice 15 foot
jumper off the dribble. He moves well without the ball,
works to get open and has a quick release with good
elevation. He has the body to compete on the boards, runs
the lanes hard on the break and has a good understanding of
the game.
