Early Decision For Houston Elite Matt Staff
Things were just starting to heat up for
Matt Staff. The skilled 6-foot-8,
200-pound four-man from Houston Memorial
High School was making an impression
with Rick Nelson Houston Elite AAU
program on the circuit and schools were
starting to call on him left and right.
But despite all the interest, Staff
won't be stringing out the process as he
recently made the decision to end his
recruitment early.
"I've verbally committed to New Mexico,"
Staff said. "I visited the campus and it
was a perfect fit for me with the
coaches, the players, and the school in
general. I liked how Coach (Steve)
Alford told me everything I needed to
know and was up front with me on
everything and told me everything I
wanted to hear."
"I played some pickup games with the
players and they were fun to hang around
with," Staff continued. "And walking
around campus with my parents, we just
liked it a lot."
Staff was blown away by everything he
saw in Albuquerque, but it was Alford's
honesty that he appreciated the most.
"He told me how much playing time I was
going to get and what I needed to do to
fit in at New Mexico," Staff said. "I've
got to get in the weight room and build
up my quickness and get more comfortable
with the ball."
With his commitment out of the way -
Staff had garnered interest ranging from
the Ivy League to mid-to-high major
programs - the forward can now focus on
finishing his time with Houston Elite
strong. "It's been going pretty good,"
Staff said.
