It was a battle of Dallas vs. Houston in the
championship game of the Last Stand basketball
tournament Wednesday night at Yates High School.
The Houston Elite took a 71-58 win against
Dallas Showtyme, as center J.J.
Richardson led the Elite team with 15
points. The Fort Bend Hightower senior felt he
played well in the two-day tournament.
“We’re played like six games in two days, and we
just came back from Vegas, but my coach said you
might as well go out with a bang,” Richardson
said. “I just had to go out there and go hard.”
Elite controlled the tempo of the game, leading
as much as 13 in the first half. Everytime
Showtyme tried to creep back into the game by
cutting the deficit to five points, Elite would
get a a couple of buckets to build the lead back
up.
Kevin Williams of Pearland
added 10 points, with Memorial forward
Matt Staff chipping in with eight
points. Showtyme was led by Javaeris
Willis – from Pinkston High School –
with a game-high 26 points.
The crowd was peppered with college scouts from
numerous schools, including UTEP, Oklahoma
State, Texas Tech, South Alabama, Penn State and
Texas A&M.
